What does one do on a perfectly cold, crisp winter’s afternoon and evening in London? A boat cruise on the Thames! I would highly recommend an Afternoon Tea Cruise by City Experiences. I received a voucher for a Christmas present so took my husband for a treat.

The food itself was lovely. We received a variety of finger sandwiches; a scone with jam and cream; a variety of mini pastries which were delicious, topped off by our choice of tea or coffee. They were very accommodating to me as I don’t drink tea or coffee and were able to make me hot chocolate served in a tea pot! We didn’t leave a crumb and were very full afterwards! I wouldn’t go again for the food alone, but what makes it special, is the view and seeing London from a totally different perspective.
River Thames Cruise

It was especially lovely to be on the river in November as we were there from 3.30 – 5pm as dusk fell. As it was getting dark, the buildings lining the Thames were all lit up. Tower Bridge was particularly impressive as you sailed underneath then turning around in full view of the Docklands area. You start by travelling from the Tower of London, passing the London Eye and reaching the Houses of Parliament with Big Ben before cruising back down the river passing skyscrapers and Landmarks.
The Boat
The boat is set up like a café with tables in pairs, some quite close together so easy to sit as a four. If the boat isn’t full, then they are very considerate and sit you with a table between parties for privacy. You can pay extra for a window table which is a luxury but not a necessity as you can only get a decent photo from being outside on the deck anyway.

From about halfway through, one of the members of staff provided a commentary on the sights we were sailing past. It was very informative and quite amusing at times! We had finished eating by the time we reached Big Ben so were able to head up to the top deck and stay there to enjoy the rest of the cruise.
Top Tips for your afternoon tea:
The top deck is the best place for photographs with plenty of seating to stay once you have finished eating. The best photos we took were of the Houses of Parliament at the furthest part of the tour as the boat turns around. The Tower of London and Tower Bridge were equally spectacular and you are able to get shots of both sides of the bridge.
This is perfect for an activity in the winter. It was pretty special to start off in daylight and end in the dark with all the lights.
Website
River Cruise Timings
We arrived at the boat for 3.15pm. The cruise left at 3.30pm and arrived back at 5pm
Dress code
Casual but I wouldn’t wear sports clothes or flip flops. People dressed smartly as it was a special occasion for many.
Getting There:
The start and end of the cruise is the Tower Millennium Pier just next to The Tower of London.
Easy access by tube, the nearest station is Tower Hill
A 20 minute walk from London Bridge Station along the North Thames Path (highly recommend).
Price
£52 a person
Toilets
Decent and clean towards the back of the boat beyond the bar. The boat moves very slowly so it was easy to walk around and not need to hold on anywhere.
Eating and Drinking
Aside from tea and coffee (and Hot Chocolate!), you can order any drink off the menu for an extra cost of course.
Car parking
None available nearby. Public transport is your main option.
Accessibility
Suitable for children but it would be awkward with toddlers. They charge adult prices for all and suggest on the website that it is for 18+
There is a ramp to get on and off the boat if you have mobility issues but wheelchairs cannot be accommodated.
No pets allowed but service and guide dogs are.
